ICT equipment price rise

Reports are saying that because of the Japanese earthquake prices are likely to rise for ICT equipment. This is tempting school to bring their ICT purchasing forward.

The effect of the supply shortage and the increase in demand will push prices even higher, along with budget cuts this could pose some difficult decisions for some educational establishments.

Some people will see this as a good justification for cutting the so called unnecessary ICT spending, and channel spending into other resources that are perceived to have greater value.

This is however something many will hope will not happen. It would appear that some high profile figure from the business and IT world are throwing their support for ICT in the class room including Rupert Murdoch at the e G8 Forum presentation recently.

The price rise is only speculation, however this is simple economics in action, a usefully example anyone teaching economics can use. Obviously the cut in public sector spending around the world will restrict the increase in price.

Communication with parents

Schools make progress towards using technology to communicate with parents.

A recent report has shown that most secondary schools use e-mail to communicate with parents in some way. The idea of a school not using e-mail to contact parents in this day and age seems backward to me.

This said the drive must also come from parents actively telling school how they wish for parents to communicate with them, doing everything through termly reports and phone calls however can't be the method of choice for most parents in this day and age?

Too much technology in the classroom?

Do you think there is too much technology in the classroom?

I found a BBC News article where this question was investigated in January 2007. The outcome was unclear as you can expect some teacher argued technology had its place and others very less keen.

This article is now more than 4 years old, what it the situation how in your school or establishment? Tell us what you think about this, the more information the better to help our research.
